1 1/2 c. hot water with 1 tsp. soda
1/2 c. margarine
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. flour
3/4 tsp. soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. nuts
1 c. chocolate chips (may also use butterscotch)
Mix together the dates and hot water with soda. While this cools cream margarine, sugar, eggs and vanilla. Sift together flour, 3/4 teaspoon soda and salt. Add creamed mixture and dry ingredients to original date mixture. Mix well and pour into a 9x13-inch pan. Sprinkle with mixture of brown sugar, nuts and chocolate chips. Bake at 350 for 40 minutes.
