Welcome to Preserving Anabaptist Foodways, a blog that is dedicated to preserving Mennonite, Amish, and affiliated groups' recipes and the customs surrounding them when applicable. We'll be hunting down old church cookbooks and sharing what we find in them with you. Please note that if you have something copyrighted, just message us and we will remove it. We will be sharing only recipes that come from old congregational cookbooks or obscure out of print items - nothing current, nothing printed by any publishing house (at least to our knowledge). All recipes will be attributed to their creators according to each book.
We feel that this is an important project, to preserve the culture around Amish and Mennonite food and recipes. We're well known for our cooking, and we want this site to be a resource for anabaptist cooks and church congregations that may have forgotten a recipe from the past, or are looking for a traditional recipe for a great meal. Also, since so many of us Mennonites are amateur church historians, this may be a useful tool in that regard also, since what we eat is so informed by the history of our families.
Also, when you cook and eat, give thanks to our Creator and Lord Jesus Christ, that we have the resources to make these foods and for the nourishment they bring us.
Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." -- Matthew 4:4.
